Requesting help

Post by Zeb »

We all know someone with kids of varying ages who sit on the internet for hours on end. Today the kids know a lot more about computers than adults do. Social networking sites have been around for some time and if anything are gaining popularity.

My concern is the amount of information some of these sites ask for. They ask for loads of personal information which most adults wouldn't supply. The innocent side of these sites is for people to keep in contact with each other and for others to make friends around the world. The darker side is for paedophiles, stalkers and identity fraud to name a few.

My plan is to create a website containing all the information a parent would need to open their eyes to the dangers of these networking sites and some advice to help keep the surfing of their children safe. I'd like to help educate the parents so they're at least aware of the good and bad of these sites so they know what they can do.

I've had an idea to contact the local police station and ask if I can speak to someone there about this project as well as approaching a couple schools in my area to see what feedback I can obtain from them. I'm hoping someone from the right department at the police station will be able to check information before it goes on the website and to maybe even supply advice. After all, the last thing I want is for the wrong advice to go onto it and someone gets into trouble or even worse, hurt.

What I'm looking for is someone to assist in creating the website. I have HTML, XHTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL and a little JavaScript experience so I could make the entire website myself if need be but having someone alongside with time to spare would be great.

I'm not asking for any help with finances or anything - I already have more than enough web space. One area I'm not great at is wording it all.

Anyone interested in helping or even have any suggestions they'd like to put forward?

This will be a non-money making website - I will fund everything myself.

Hi Zeb,

This sounds like a noble project.

Are you sure there isn't already an organisation set-up to deal with this?
Cheers!

I remember watching on the news recently where they were highlighting this being a problem as there was currently no source for adults to get such information.

My sister fosters kids and I've seen the damage that can be done - it isn't very nice.
