Ftp download - special characters

Post by cybermat »

Hello,

i'm trying to download from ftp.amigascne.org the whole modland section. I noticed that files with special characters are not downloaded, so i thought it was a bug or a setting of filezilla. I found this http://wiki.filezilla-project.org/Character_Set

Anybody has faced the same ? Any solution?

Thanks in advance!

configure a new connection and set the option "use custom charset" and set it to iso8859-1

On other ftp clients I didn't have this problem. I think filezilla is being rather strict and using 7 bit only if you don't specify a charset.

All very well being good and correct, but its not much help if it doesnt work that well with many well used ftp servers :/

http://trac.filezilla-project.org/ticket/3299 and there are other links.

Just to note: Amigascne.org says

o DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MIRROR THIS ARCHIVE WITHOUT PERMISSION. YOUR
HOST AND/OR NETWORK WILL BE BANNED AS A RESULT OF IGNORING THIS
WARNING.

so you might want to split your downloading up between a few other mirrors such as ftp://modland.ziphoid.com and my mirror (not all that fast but) ftp://aero.exotica.org.uk/pub/mirrors/modland/

Actually i'm not mirroring anything! Just downloading a lot of modules. I wrote WHOLE but it's not what i'm doing. Also because my Pc doesn't support 400000 files in queue :D :D :D

Is there a FTP command to have the remote server zip or unzip files, if so, what is the command? I am running SmartFTP and my goal is to upload a series of files and then have the remote FTP server zip them together instead of having to zip them together on my local machine and then uploading the zip file.

Don't think so. Some servers have a gzip extension to compress individual files, but I don't know of any auto zip feature.
