P.S.: Bald auch auf Deutsch, hab bloß grad kein Bock zum übersetzen ;)
Q: There are 2 amiga emulators available right now, what's the difference?
A: Well, Fellow is DOS only. You can emulate an A500 as the maximum. WinUAE is also able 2 emulate an A1200, coz it has the AGA feature implemented since v0.8.8. I prefer WinUAE, coz Fellow only works without sound on my machine, and that sux :). But 4 some games, u'll need Fellow, coz they don't work with WinUAE.
Q: Now i got WinUAE, what config should i try for older games?
A: The best settings for older games would be: 1MB chip RAM (or 8MB), kickstart 1.3, 68000 cpu, if u have a fast pc (pII or so) approximate A500 speed, if you have an older one i think adjustable between CPU and chipset should be checked and set to 3 or so, 800x600, fullscreen, correct aspect, line mode doubled, centering horizontal and vertical checked, full ecs or ocs, on slower pcs you'll have to change the refresh rate, sound emulated, 100% accurate, 48000khz, 16 bit sample type, stereo is best for fast cpus i think ;). That should do it. Then insert your adfs into the virtual floppy drives. Some older games only accept one disk drive, so don't put any disks in the other ones.
Q: And for newer ones?
A: Try to max out the memory settings, perhaps 8MB fast RAM and 2MB chip RAM, donnu which config is better, just try it out. Set the CPU to 68020 for an A1200, or use 68020/68881 as the fastest CPU available at this moment for UAE. And check "Fastest possible" for the new games. In the display tab, choose AGA chipset, and leave the rest of the settings as the one for the old games. That should do it. But some games require special settings, u'll have to try out, what settings are the best 4 u.
Q: Harddrive?
A: There r 2 possibilities in WinUAE to set up a hd: either u choose a directory on your hard disk, where the files will be stored in, or u create a hard disk file. The first hard disk is called DH0, the second DH1 and so on. If u check "Add PC drives at startup", you can access your pc hard disk, floppy drive and cd-rom from the workbench. This is very useful if u have an original amiga cd-rom, i never tried it out, but i think it should work :)
Q: What are these different file formats: lha, adf, adz, dms?
A: lha is the standard amiga packing program, like winzip on the pc. I have the PC version of it on my page, but i recommend using the amiga version, coz old ms-dos doesn't know what 2 do with these long filenames used on the amiga. adf is the standard format 2 use with uae, it contains an image of the original amiga floppy, so that a PC can read it. adz are packed adf files, use winzip 2 unzip 'em. dms is also some sort of packer, u can find an extractor on my page. After u extract 'em, u have an adf file 4 use with the emulators.
Q: How do i convert my original amiga floppys to adfs?
A: There r 2 possibilities: either u use a serial cable, and terminal programs on both the pc and the amiga 2 transfer the files, or u use adfread and a cable that u connect 2 your floppy ide cable and your parallel port. 2 no. 1: the bad thing 'bout that is, that it won't work on amigas using kickstart that is < 2.0, coz u'll need crossdos, which won't run on kick 1.3 or so. 2 no. 2: you'll need a thin piece of cable (~ 50cm). There's already a great manual 4 doing this on Borrowed Time by Ant, so check it out :)
Okay, that's all 4 now, i'll add more l8er, or, if u know something (questions ...), mail me as i already mentioned above! :)
